2D Tracking

My first workshop on 2D tracking with Jon, gave me a bigger insight into 2D tracking. Having played around with it in first year I was excited to experiment on Adobe After Effects. I mostly enjoyed learning how to replace a sky, I thought this was really cool and definitely helpful, we also played around with basic 2D tracking where we just attached a checkerboard to a null object on Adobe After Effects. Below you can see my rendered checkerboard attempt and also my sky replacement.

From this workshop I learnt the basics of 2D tracking, I was able to perform the basics. I found out that 2D tracking does not work if the object goes out of camera sight or does not work if the angle of the object you are trying to track goes into the X axis. I also learnt that if the shutter speed is too fast then this also makes it hard for 2D to track.

Projection Mapping

My second workshop with Clive today, he explained how to projection map onto buildings and how this was used as a spectacle mainly for advertising. He also did mini demonstrations in class on projection mapping and how to incorporate augmented reality into this. Online I was able to find some really cool examples of projection mapping:

Whilst socialising with my friends at Walkabout in Lincoln town centre I was also able to view some projection mapping first hand, this was the first time I had notably saw projection mapping. Before this I was never aware that it existed and when I previously saw it, it was dismissed.

Augmented Reality

Today was my first workshop with Clive; he demonstrated a range of Augmented reality apps and variations. I downloaded an app straight to my phone where I was able to try out some of my own augmented reality.

With this app I was able to place objects within a room and scale and position them to appear as if they were actually in the room. I was amazed that an app could do this and I didn’t need any fancy software to create something like this. Clive also spoken about another app called Blippar, this is an app, which you could place over a well-known brand, and it would tell you different things about the brand.

Convergence Task – UNDERSTANDING THE BRIEF!

BRIEF

From reading and understanding the brief the next couple of weeks I will undergo a series of workshops, two workshops within each sector:

  • Branding Design & DTP
  • Motion Graphics
  • Visual Effects
  • Digital Interactions

After completing the 8 weeks of workshops I will be tasked to incorporate all the skills that I have learnt along the way into a one-minute video. This will be my own personal digital portfolio, which demonstrates my skills, and techniques I have absorbed over the skill cycle period. The convergence task is a total of 30% of this semester’s grade; the other 20% is the R&D Presentation.

After reading through the brief at first I felt confused because as a student I don’t really feel I have yet developed into an artist. There are things I enjoy doing, and I feel I am good at but nothing as of yet that sticks out to me. I still feel like the world is my oyster and I could be taken in any direction, it’s just a case of finding that ‘something’ that inspires and motivates me each and every day.
